Can a Halo-IR Sauna Help with Allergies or Asthma?

Discover how salt therapy and infrared heat may fit into your respiratory wellness routine.

Sneezing, congestion, irritated sinuses, and difficulty breathing can make everyday life uncomfortable. Whether you're dealing with seasonal allergies or managing asthma, finding ways to feel more comfortable can become an important part of your wellness routine.

At Riverview Wellness, we believe that feeling your best goes beyond your workouts. Recovery, relaxation, and taking time to care for your body all play a role in overall well-being.

That's where our Halo-IR Sauna comes in!

Combining halotherapy (dry salt therapy), infrared heat, and red light therapy, our Halo-IR Sauna offers a customizable wellness experience. But can it actually help with allergies or asthma?

Let's explore how it works, what the research suggests, and what you should know before booking a session.

What Is a Halo-IR Sauna?

A Halo-IR Sauna combines multiple wellness therapies into one relaxing experience.

Unlike a traditional sauna, which primarily heats the surrounding air, an infrared sauna uses radiant heat to warm your body. Halotherapy adds another element by dispersing microscopic salt particles into the air.

At Riverview Wellness, our Halo-IR Sauna features:

  • Halotherapy: Dry salt particles dispersed into the air for a salt therapy experience.

  • Infrared heat: Radiant warmth designed to encourage relaxation and support your recovery routine.

  • Red light therapy: An additional wellness modality being studied for its potential effects on skin and tissue health.

  • Customizable settings: Adjustable lighting, music, and the option to enjoy salt and red light therapy without turning on the heat.

Our private, 45-minute sessions allow you to personalize your experience according to your comfort and wellness goals.

How Might Salt Therapy Affect Your Respiratory System?

Halotherapy is one of the most interesting features of the Halo-IR Sauna, especially for people curious about respiratory wellness.

During a session, a halogenerator disperses fine salt particles into the air. As you breathe normally, some of these particles may enter your respiratory tract.

Researchers have explored whether inhaled salt particles can help thin mucus, making it easier to clear from the airways.

The American Lung Association has discussed this possible mechanism, while also emphasizing that evidence is insufficient to establish clinical treatment guidelines for salt therapy.

Although some people report feeling more comfortable after salt therapy, individual experiences vary. More research is needed to determine whether these effects translate into consistent improvements in respiratory health.

Can a Halo-IR Sauna Help with Seasonal Allergies?

If you live in Chesapeake or the surrounding Hampton Roads area, you know that seasonal allergies can be frustrating.

Pollen, dust, and other airborne allergens can contribute to sneezing, congestion, and irritated sinuses. For some people, these symptoms can make it difficult to feel comfortable throughout the day.

Salt therapy has attracted interest as a possible complementary wellness practice for people experiencing respiratory discomfort.

However, there is currently insufficient clinical evidence to conclude that halotherapy reliably relieves seasonal allergy symptoms. It also has not been shown to remove allergens from the body or prevent allergic reactions.

A Halo-IR Sauna may provide a relaxing environment to unwind during allergy season, but it should not replace allergy medications or other treatments recommended by your healthcare provider.

What About Asthma? Is a Halo-IR Sauna Safe?

Asthma is a chronic condition involving inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Symptoms can include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Some research has investigated halotherapy as a complementary approach for people with asthma.

A 2021 scientific review examined studies involving salt-based therapies and asthma. Although some findings suggested potential benefits, the researchers emphasized the need for larger, more rigorous studies.

Importantly, halotherapy is not an established asthma treatment, and it should never replace prescribed medications, including rescue inhalers or daily controller medications.

Individuals with asthma may also respond differently to dry salt particles, heat, and fragrances. These exposures can trigger symptoms in some people.

If you have asthma, speak with your healthcare provider before trying a Halo-IR Sauna. Avoid using a sauna during an asthma flare-up, and stop your session immediately if you experience coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing.

Does Infrared Heat Offer Additional Benefits?

While halotherapy is the component most closely associated with respiratory wellness, infrared heat contributes to the overall sauna experience.

Infrared saunas operate differently from traditional saunas, using infrared light to warm the body directly.

The warmth may help you relax, ease muscle tension, and create an opportunity to decompress after a busy day.

Research into the health effects of infrared saunas is ongoing. According to Mayo Clinic, some studies have explored potential benefits for various health conditions, but larger, more rigorous studies are still needed.

There is not enough evidence to establish infrared heat as a treatment for asthma or allergies.

For individuals who are sensitive to heat, Riverview Wellness offers the option to enjoy salt and red light therapy without turning on the infrared heat. This provides additional flexibility, although salt therapy itself may still be unsuitable for some people with respiratory conditions.

Make Respiratory Wellness Part of Your Self-Care Routine

Managing allergies or asthma involves more than finding one solution. Following your healthcare provider's recommendations, understanding your triggers, and maintaining a consistent treatment plan are essential.

Alongside those steps, creating time for relaxation and recovery can be a valuable part of caring for yourself.

Whether you're interested in exploring halotherapy, unwinding after a workout, or simply taking a break from your busy schedule, our Halo-IR Sauna offers a personalized wellness experience.
